What Is Drawdown in Trading? Static, Trailing and Daily Limits Explained

What Is Drawdown in Trading? — Papaya Funding

Every trader has a number they don't want to see. That number is drawdown.

In your own account, drawdown is a feeling. In a prop firm, it's a hard line. Cross it once and the account is gone.

Here's what drawdown in trading actually measures, how static, trailing and daily limits work, and what the rules look like on every Papaya Funding account. Papaya accounts use simulated capital.

Key takeaways

What is drawdown in trading?

Drawdown is the decline in an account's value from its highest point (peak) to its lowest point (trough) before a new high is made. It shows how much a trader has lost from the top, not from the start.

Example: your account peaks at $105,000, then falls to $98,700. Your drawdown is $6,300, or 6% from the peak, even though you're only down 1.3% from a $100,000 start.

Why does drawdown matter?

Losses and gains aren't symmetrical. The deeper you fall, the more you need to make back.

DrawdownGain needed to recover
3%3.1%
5%5.3%
10%11.1%
20%25.0%
30%42.9%
50%100.0%

Recovery gain = loss ÷ (100 − loss) × 100, when loss is expressed as a percentage. That's why prop firms cap drawdown. And it's why keeping losses small matters more than chasing big wins.

What is a drawdown limit in a prop firm?

A drawdown limit is the maximum loss a prop firm allows before an account fails. Breaking it is a hard breach: the challenge ends, or the funded account closes.

Many prop firms use two limits at once: a daily limit for any single day, and a max drawdown for the life of the account. The max drawdown is either static or trailing. Not every program has a daily limit.

What is a daily drawdown limit?

A daily drawdown limit is the most you can lose in a single trading day. It resets every day.

On Papaya Funding Forex challenges, the daily limit is 3% of balance. On a $100,000 account, that's $3,000. Instant Funding accounts use 2%.

Firms calculate the daily limit in different ways, for example on balance or on equity including open trades. At Papaya Funding, your daily breach level is shown in your trader dashboard, which updates about every 60 seconds. Do not assume that an unchanged display means you have additional loss allowance.

What is static drawdown?

Static drawdown is a max loss limit set from your starting balance. It never moves, no matter how much profit you make.

Example: a $100,000 Papaya One account has a 9% static drawdown. The floor is $91,000. Grow the account to $108,000 and the floor is still $91,000, so you now have $17,000 of room.

Papaya Funding uses static drawdown on Papaya Signature (3%), Papaya Two (8%) and Papaya One (9%) Forex accounts.

What is trailing drawdown?

Trailing drawdown is a max loss limit that moves up as your account grows. It follows your highest balance or equity at a fixed distance, but never moves down.

The effect: profit you make raises the floor, so you don't keep all the extra room you earned.

Intraday trailing vs EOD trailing

There are two kinds of trailing drawdown, and the difference is big.

Example: a $100,000 Papaya Funding Forex Instant account has a 5% EOD trailing drawdown, so the floor starts at $95,000. The intraday column is a hypothetical comparison, not a Papaya account rule.

MomentBalanceEOD trailing floor (Papaya)Intraday trailing floor
Start$100,000$95,000$95,000
Day 1 close$101,500$96,500$96,500
Day 2 intraday peak$103,000$96,500 (peak ignored)$98,000
Day 2 close$101,000$96,500$98,000
Room left—$4,500$3,000

With EOD trailing, a peak you didn't close at doesn't raise your trailing floor. Daily and maximum loss limits still apply during the session.

Static vs trailing drawdown: which is better?

Floor is set fromStarting balanceHighest equity, in real timeHighest end-of-day balance

For most traders, static drawdown is more forgiving, because profits add room. EOD trailing avoids raising the floor for open profit you give back. Neither model removes the need for risk management. See our swing trading guide and Micro vs Mini futures guide.

What happens to drawdown after a payout?

On some accounts, the drawdown locks after a payout. At Papaya Funding, ‘lock upon payout’ means the drawdown level stays at its pre-payout level after you withdraw.

It applies to Papaya One and Instant Funding on Forex, and to all Papaya futures accounts. It doesn't apply to Papaya Two or Papaya Signature on Forex. Withdrawing reduces your balance, so check the room left above the locked floor before your next trade.

How do you manage drawdown? 5 rules

  1. Know your floor in dollars every morning. On a trailing account, it may have moved since yesterday.
  2. Consider risking 0.25–0.5% per trade. This is an educational risk-management example, not a Papaya requirement or a guarantee. Use our lot size guide to size each trade.
  3. Set a personal daily stop, for example at half the firm's daily limit, so a bad day stays a bad day. If your program has no daily limit, set your own.
  4. Respect the news window. At Papaya Funding, you can't open or close a trade within 3 minutes before or after high-impact news. Existing positions may remain open. Plan around it.
  5. Size for gaps on Forex weekend holds. A Monday gap can open past your stop. Papaya futures accounts don't allow overnight positions at all.

FAQ

What is a good max drawdown in trading?

There's no single number, but lower is better. In a prop firm, the account's max drawdown is the hard limit. A trader can set a personal limit well below it, for example under half the allowed amount, to leave room for a bad week. This is not a guarantee against a breach.

Is drawdown calculated on balance or equity?

It depends on the firm and the rule. On Papaya Funding static accounts, max drawdown is set from the starting balance. On EOD trailing accounts, it moves with the highest end-of-day balance. Your exact breach levels are shown in the Papaya trader dashboard; check the full rules for how open losses are treated.

What's the difference between daily and max drawdown?

Daily drawdown limits how much you can lose in one day and resets every day. Max drawdown limits how much the account can fall in total, for its whole life. Breaking either applicable limit is a hard breach.

What happens if I hit the drawdown limit?

The account fails. In a challenge, the evaluation ends. On a funded account at Papaya Funding, the account closes and any accumulated gains are forfeited, unless you bought the Payout Protector add-on.

Is static or trailing drawdown better for beginners?

Static drawdown is usually easier to understand, because the floor never moves and profits give you more room. With EOD trailing drawdown, check your floor after every winning day. Your strategy and the other account rules still matter.

Drawdown isn't the price of trading. It's the budget. Know where your floor is, in dollars, before every trade. If you're ready to trade with clear limits, pick your Papaya account here.
